What is a CAGE code?
A CAGE (Commercial and Government Entity) code is a five-character identifier assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency to firms doing business with the US federal government. It is required alongside the UEI for SAM.gov registration.
The CAGE code is a five-character alphanumeric identifier used by the federal government, especially the Department of Defense, to identify contractors. CAGE codes are assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).
When you register on SAM.gov, the system automatically requests a CAGE code from DLA if your entity does not already have one. The CAGE code typically issues within a few weeks. You cannot complete SAM.gov registration without a CAGE code.
CAGE codes are used in federal contracting systems, military supply systems, and many DoD-specific portals. Foreign vendors receive an NCAGE (NATO CAGE) code through their home country.
Your CAGE code stays with your entity for its life and does not change with address moves or ownership changes — but you should update CAGE records whenever your entity information changes materially.
